Awaiting You

A poem of young love, rushed entrapment, and the inevitability of escape.

Hot summer nights were full

Of children chasing each other’s laughter

Guiding us between the big people

Away to a place only we know

I turn

I see

A Firefly

Dancing intimately for us

Teaching me long before I was told

How to love another from a distance

And I have never wanted something more

Than how I wished to hold your light

I turn

I see

A Firefly

In a bell jar, ziploc tub, plastic cup

Hurry, before they leave us

Young and eager love was dealt with

Rushed entrapment

I turn

I see

A Firefly

Resting on my finger.

I’ve longed for you, love.

My finger glows red, comfortably.

In the dimness of dawn.

Your light doesn’t fade.

Your wings still decelerating.

And in moment’s pause I wonder

If the others hadn’t ran you away

Would you have ever ran to me?
